When You're Feeling Overwhelmed, God Is There to Help

Writer: Kelsey ScismKelsey Scism

“No. Mom, no. I can’t. There’s too much stuff. Will you just help me?” my son pleaded. Together, my boys have the chore of unloading the dishwasher every day. And apparently on this specific day, his half of the chore was just too much. He was overwhelmed by the task in front of him—feeling like there was too much to do left him paralyzed on the kitchen floor begging for my help. ⁣⁣

⁣⁣

“You get started, and then I’ll help you,” I replied. ⁣⁣

⁣⁣

And just as I spoke those words to my son, I feel like God has whispered them to my own heart numerous times, “Get started, I’ll help you.” ⁣⁣

⁣⁣

Maybe you’ve heard that same whisper. Maybe you’ve experienced that same overwhelming, paralyzing feeling. ⁣⁣

⁣⁣

My to-do list is so long, I’ll never get all these things done.⁣⁣

Committing to that weekly Bible study will take too much time, I just can’t make it work.⁣⁣

Loving that person is just too hard, it’s easier to avoid them.⁣⁣

Disciplining my children is too painful and so much work.⁣⁣

Telling my co-worker about Jesus is too uncomfortable. ⁣⁣

Getting everyone out the door for church every Sunday is too much of a hassle.⁣⁣

Reading my Bible in the morning means I have to get up too early. ⁣⁣

Reaching out to my new neighbor is too risky . . . what if she doesn’t like me?⁣⁣

⁣⁣

We find ourselves on the floor, whining and pleading, “No. God, no. I can’t. It’s too much.” But, we forget to ask Him for help. ⁣⁣

⁣⁣

We tend to think our excuses are stronger than God’s power. But that is the farthest thing from the truth. In Hebrews 13:20-21 we are told that through the power of Christ, who God raised from the dead, we will be equipped to do every good thing he has planned for us. ⁣⁣

⁣⁣

Friends, when we feel overwhelmed by something God has asked us to do, we can simply turn to Him and say, “God, will You just help me?” And we can trust in the promise of His reply, “You get started and I’ll help you.”⁣⁣

*Want to join me in meditating on God’s Word this week? Save these words as your lock screen. Write them on a notecard and place them somewhere you’ll see them during your day. Throughout the week, recite them to your kids, your spouse, or a friend. When we focus on His word, He will use it to produce results in our lives.
